Reaching out for therapy can be a big step, and it’s completely normal to feel unsure about what the process will look like. Many people wonder what happens in a first session, what they’re expected to share, and whether therapy will feel comfortable.
At Safe Place Therapy, we aim to make the process as welcoming and supportive as possible. Our goal is to help you feel informed, comfortable, and supported from the very beginning. Here’s what the process typically looks like when starting therapy with us.
1️⃣ Book a Free Consultation
The first step is scheduling a free 20-minute consultation call with one of our therapists. This call can take place by phone or video and is simply an opportunity to connect and see if the therapist feels like a good fit for you.
There are a few ways you can book a consultation. You can call or email the practice with a specific therapist in mind, or our team can help match you with a therapist who may be a good fit based on what you’re looking for. You can also book directly through our secure online booking link if you prefer scheduling on your own.
During this consultation, you may talk about what has been bringing you to therapy, what you’re hoping to work on, and any questions you might have about the process. The therapist will also explain how sessions work, including things like scheduling, fees, and policies.
There is no pressure during this call, and you are welcome to share only what feels comfortable for you. Many people find that this initial conversation helps ease some of the uncertainty about starting therapy and finding the right therapist.
2️⃣ Scheduling an Intake Session
If you decide to move forward after the consultation, the next step is booking an intake session with your therapist.
Before your intake session, you will be asked to review and sign a consent form and add a payment method on file through our secure client portal. Completing these steps ahead of time helps ensure that your session can focus fully on getting to know you and your needs.
The intake session typically lasts 50 or 90 minutes and can take place either virtually or in person, depending on your preference.
During the session, your therapist will guide you through a series of intake questions and explore any topics that feel important to you. This conversation helps them better understand your background, current concerns, and what you may be hoping to gain from therapy. You may talk about things such as your personal history, supports in your life, past experiences with mental health, and your goals moving forward.
The intake session is not a test or an interview — it’s simply a starting point that helps your therapist understand how they can best support you moving forward.
3️⃣ Beginning Your Therapy Journey
After the intake session, you and your therapist will begin working together to build your “safe place” in therapy.
Together, you will explore your goals, develop helpful strategies, and work through the challenges that brought you to therapy. Many clients choose to schedule several sessions ahead of time to create consistency and build a strong therapeutic relationship, though scheduling can always be flexible depending on your needs.
Therapy is a collaborative process, and your therapist will meet you where you are. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you start — therapy is a space where you can take things at your own pace.
👣 Taking the First Step
Starting therapy can feel intimidating, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Seeking support is a meaningful step toward caring for your mental health and well-being.
If you’re considering therapy and would like to learn more, you can begin by booking a free 20-minute consultation with one of our therapists. We would be honoured to support you on your journey.
